Any candle lover would know that candles aren’t as easy as just lighting them until they all melt out. There is an intricate science behind candles from our team developing fragrances and binding waxes to our customers lighting the candles and dispersing the scents. This is why it is very important to know some basic candle tips not just to make your Royal Essence candles worth it, but also for your safety!

The First Burn

There are a few things you need to know after you’ve taken your jar out of its shiny packaging. The first burn is the most crucial as this will determine how your candle will perform in the next burns. Candle wax has what they call a “memory,” which is when the melt pool—or portion where there’s liquid wax—remains the same size throughout its lifespan. With that said, it is important to always light your candles until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar in every burn to avoid wax tunnelling.

Wicks tend to be an afterthought for many people, but proper wick trimming can avoid a lot of things from tunnelling to possible explosion of the jar. When you don’t trim your wicks, bigger flames will be created. This, combined with a long burning time, may lead to your jar shattering when it gets too hot.

Another thing to remember is to inspect if there are any cracks in the jar as this can be a combustion risk. Ensure the glassware is always intact and if you notice a crack at anytime during the life of the candle, stop using the candle and safely discard it to avoid any accident that might occur.

Here’s your checklist for the first burn!

  • Inspect the jar for any cracks.
  • Trim the wicks to approximately 6mm or at least ¼ inch.
  • Check for any debris like wax trimmings and remove them before lighting.
  • Place your jar on a heat-resistant surface to avoid getting too hot.
  • Light your candle for at least 3 hours or until the wax evens out up to the edges of the jar.
  • Do not leave the candle unattended as the jewellery surprise will appear within 2-5 hours of burntime.

The Sparkly Surprise

Foil starting to peek out of your wax? Our jewellery surprise sits right on the top part of the wax so you don’t have to wait 50 hours to reveal it. This is why it’s important to watch out during your first or second burn. As much as the surprise is the highlight of our products for many of our customers, we want to make sure that your candles still remain in good condition after you reveal your jewellery.

To ensure you don’t ruin the wax, do not try to dig out the jewellery surprise by scraping cold wax or partially melted wax. Make sure you can fully see the foil until you start taking it out with a pair of tweezers or a spoon.

Here are some things to remember:

  • Do not leave your candle unattended. Check within 2-5 hours of first or second burn to avoid burning the foil.
  • Snuff out the flame before taking out the jewellery.
  • Clean out the wax and take out your jewellery!
  • Make sure you don’t throw the code. You need it to appraise your jewellery.
  • Flaunt your sparkly surprise and find its  appraisal!

Safety First!

After your first burn and your jewellery reveal, you may now enjoy your candle and fill your home with your favourite scents every day!

Our 400g soy candles have 90 to 100 hours of burntime, but you should only burn them consecutively for 3-5 hours to avoid overheating of the jar.

Here are some safety tips for your candle’s next burns:

  • Always trim the wick to 6mm or ¼ inch before every burn.
  • Do not leave the candle unattended, ever. When lighting a candle before bedtime, set a timer to make sure you don’t forget to extinguish your candle.
  • Make sure your lit candle is not near any paper, cloth, or flammable objects to avoid catching fire.
  • If lighting more than one candle, make sure they are 2-3 inches apart.
  • Avoid open windows and drafts or lighting the candle outdoors to prevent soot.
  • If the flame gets too big, snuff it out and light again once the wax has hardened.

After Burn Care

Getting sleepy? It’s time to snuff out your candles! Extinguishing your candles is simple, but important!

Here are some things to remember:

  • Extinguish flame with a candle snuffer or dip the wick in the wax with a pair of tweezers to avoid smoke. Blowing out candles might also cause the wax to splatter.
  • Do not move candles around when the wax is still in its liquid form as it might splash or ruin the form of the candle for the next burns.
  • Put the lid on the candle to avoid dust and debris and to avoid wax splattering.
  • Keep jar with liquid wax away from children and pets.
  • Double check the wick for embers before leaving the candle unattended.
  • Do not burn your candle all the way down. Leave at least 10mm of wax and save them later for wax melts!

Now that you know all these important safety precautions and care tips, you can call yourself a candle connoisseur! What scent are you ready to fill your home with? Take our  quiz to find out the home fragrance just for you!
